The amazing work of Barbara Ségal
In my quest to get my bags noticed on social media, I came across an article on Pinterest that alerted me to the breathtaking work of Barbara Ségal. In addition to her public art sculptures, she recreates the finer objects in life in stone. I immediately fell in love with her iconic stone bags, more of which can be viewed on her personal page here: https://www.barbarasegal.com/#/designerhandbags/. I should consider myself blessed if one day I were to learn to wrestle a bag from leather, the way she sculpts from marble.
Her art asks questions: why these bags, what message is being transmitted to future generations about beauty, femininity, wealth? But also personal questions: is any bag really worth the premium price paid for some? And should I, as nascent bagmaker, aspire to emulate this, even if I could? And what about names. Will anyone ever regret the honour I tried to bestow on them by naming a bag after them? Even if only people in the know, know this?
Whatever the answers to these questions are, iconic bags are of course amazing in their own right. They define our era. And I imagine these bags to have practical use as well otherwise they would have been relegated to oblivion by now. And practical use, yes, I think, I hope, my bags will at least have that going for them. Time will tell.
